R.I.P.

by Rachel on June 30, 2009

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to say our good-byes.

On June 30, 2009, my ailing ipod took its own life by plummeting from a StairClimber when asked to play the Britney Spears song, “My Prerogative.” Already two years old (96 in ipod years) it could not withstand the blunt force trauma suffered. I performed CPR (hold down the select and menu keys at the same time) and rushed it back to its MacBook for surgergy (i.e. restoration). Sadly, it did not have the strength to survive surgery (uploading all its songs again). It slipped into a “Do Not Disconnect” coma and did not wake up.

This ipod will be remembered for being my first classic model, after a nano and a mini. It loved traveling to New York, reading audiobooks, displaying favorite pictures, and cuddling in bed with me every night.

It will be missed.

Taste Testing: FitNutz

by Rachel on June 30, 2009

Through the blogosphere, I’ve come across quite a few people using peanut butter powder. These are powdered peanut products that you mix with water to achieve a “peanut butter” that has less fat and calories than regular peanut butter. I used to be really into “substitutes” for fattening or high-cal treats, so this seemed like something I’d love. Then I read a recipe where it was mixed with Greek yogurt. This, to me, seemed too amazing not to try. Peanut butter Greek yogurt? Yes please.

There are two main suppliers of this stuff, PB2 and FitNutz. I went with FitNutz because I like the arbitrary use of the letter “z.” With shipping it was around $7. It came much sooner than I thought it would, so that was impressive.

Here are the nutrition facts.

Pretty decent, and, if it tastes good, could really slash the calories in a PB & J.

I was so, so excited to mix up my Fage-FitNutz concoction. I put one tablespoon in my yogurt. It certainly smelled like real peanut butter. I mixed. It didn’t seem like my cup of yogurt could handle a second tablespooon. I mixed and mixed but it still tasted a little sour, so I added honey and another half tablespoon to FitNutz. And it was still…not good.

I can’t really explain how it wasn’t good. It just tasted like Fage, but it was brown. It wasn’t bad, but I think the fact I had such high hopes made it worse. It tasted like disappointment.

I decided to give it another try, because maybe it was just the yogurt thing that didn’t work for me. I added it to a smoothie along with coconut milk, a banana, and protein powder. It definitely gave the smoothie a really peanutty taste, which was good! So in terms of adding flavor to a smoothie, I’d say it does the trick, and it contains protein so it’s not a bad addition. However, adding a half tablespoon of actual peanut butter would also flavor your smoothie for the same amount calories.

The “peanut powder” tastes like peanuts, but not peanut butter. But peanut butter is infinitely better than peanuts. By taking out the fat, they are taking away what makes PB so craveworthy–and removing thehealthy fat that makes nut butter good for you.

While some people swear by this stuff, I think I can safely say I won’t order FitNutz again (unless there’s still some trick I’m missing out on). I’d give PB2 a try, because it’s the original and might be better, but as of right now, I’m sticking with the real deal.

Avoiding The Salad Trap

by Rachel on June 30, 2009

For many of us, diet disasters lurk in restaurants. There’s a lot of cheesy fried goodness, bread, cheesy fried bread, mucho margaritas, and molten chocolate cake. But dining out is often part of being a social and employed human being, so it’s important to play it smart.

You know one common way to stay healthy at a restaurant is to order a salad. This can be a simple healthy option to staying on track. But just because something sits on top of greens, it might still pack more fat and calories than you want to eat in an entire day.

AOL Health has a great slide show of restaurant salads that are anything but healthy. It’s always good to have specific examples of ones to watch out for! You can check out the slide show here.

Here are some of the best ways to avoid ordering a salad with 80 grams of fat (seriously):

Check the restaurant’s Web site in advance to look up nutritionals, and be sure to see if dressing is included in the tally.

Avoid “cripsy” things (fried chicken, bacon, croutons, noodles).

Keep in mind that cheese, nuts, and avocado can all be healthy ingredients, but restaurant portions might add a lot more calories.

Skip the creamy dressings that come with and ask for a vinaigrette or olive oil and vinegar instead. Most of the salads on AOL’s slide show get their over-the-top calorie counts from dressing.

Some of these stats might make you want to go with the burger you’re really craving instead of the “good” salad. You’ll be more satisfied if you order what you want and have a balanced meal that (hopefully) includes carbs, protein, and  some fiber, as opposed to iceberg lettuce drowning in Ranch that’s going to leave you wanting more.

God knows, I’m going to take in 40 grams of fat in one sitting, I’d prefer it come by way of some combination of cheese and fries, not in one serving of Thousand Island.

Get Shorty

June 25, 2009

Today I have to go shopping for workout clothes, so of course I’m planning the usual summer suspects: unflattering capris, unflattering shorts, some mildly flattering tanks. I’m hoping there are cute skirts in my future, because lately, that’s the only kind of gym clothes that aren’t making me bored. What I really want to wear [...]

Toss My Salad: Plantain Chips

June 24, 2009

Happy Hump Day! It’s another scorcher, so it’s a good day to have a light meal, like a salad. Today’s tropical topping is the plantain! Plantains look like green bananas, but they are actually quite different. They are starchy, not sweet, and so are used more like potatoes or other vegetables. You also have to [...]
