Goood morning, gorgeous!
So, today, October 21, 2009 is National Love Your Body Day. Oh, girls. We have such complicated relationships with our bodies that we have to have an entire day devoted to loving them. I highly doubt “Men’s Health” is touching on this topic. Kind of a shame that we only do this once a year.
However, I’m not one to turn down a party, so best make some time for celebrating! Here are some of my favorite ways:
- Do something that makes you feel passionate and alive! I feel like as we get older, we realize “passion” does not always translate into “full time job.” For me, lack of passion makes me feel less confident. So whatever your thing is, find a way to do it! When the inside is thriving, it’s hard to give a shit about whether or not the outside has big thighs.
- Ditch negative self-talk. Name your inner voice and tell her to STFU every time she tells you you’re too fat or not pretty enough to do something. Watch this video if you need further inspiration.
- While you’re at it, ditch negative friends. Whether it’s that girl who always says she’s too fat – and she’s a good 20 pounds less than you – or the one who loves to go out to eat but never actually eats, say, “See ya!” Even if it’s a well-meaning family member. Shut. It. Down.
- And furthermore, don’t be that friend! Be honest; do you constantly engage other girls in conversations about how fat you are? Is it possible other women walk away from your conversations feeling worse about themselves (even if you didn’t say a word about them)? Fact: your job as a friend is to make your friends feel better, not worse. Hope that’s not a problem for you.
- Spend some time alone! When you’re alone, you find yourself making decisions all by yourself and only for yourself. That kind of selfishness is insanely liberating. Plus, you’ll learn what you truly want and all the things that make you special. After the summer I lived alone and interned in NYC, I came back to my sorority house a bit confused. Wait, I have to get other people’s opinion on what’s best for me? I’m no longer capable of choosing an outfit or deciding what to eat for dinner? Um, gee, you know what, I think I’ve got this actually.

- Be amazed by what your body can do. I love this post on Eating Journey. Don’t have Photoshop? Take a pic with the digital cam, print it, and have at it with a Sharpie. Put it on your Vision Board.
- Realize that you have to love your body before you can change it! My friend Heather put it really well when she said that if you think of your body like a gorgeous sports car, you’re going to want to put good fuel in it and take really good care of it. You aren’t going to put a lot of effort into an old hooptie. Repeat after me: “I am not a Cash for Clunker. I am a BMW. You should see me with my top down!”
Brag a little! Tell me why your body is so amazing in the comments. Inside or outside, what makes your body so grand? I’ll start! I have an amazing liver, a seriously awesome clavicle, great skin, and rather fabulous feet — they can rock in stilettos and Shox.
