Modern Meditations: Press Play and a Giveaway!

by Rachel on February 15, 2010

You guys know I love tunes that make me want to sweat, but I also love chill tunes for cooking, writing, and relaxing. As part of my February “take a daily mental break” goal, I have been spending more time listening to music and reading at night, and it’s been great! So when I heard about these new CDs, Modern Meditations, I was super excited to give them a listen. And the company was kind enough to send me the albums to review, because I had a feeling you guys would dig them!

So the whole idea is that as younger, hipper chicks (like us) might want to bliss out to music…but not want to bliss out with weird music that’s all New Age shit. I mean, don’t get me wrong, New Age shit has its time and place, but I like the Modern Meditations “no pan flutes, no wind chimes allowed” motto.

I reviewed three albums: Rock Classics, Modern Classics, and The Sounds of the Beatles. I listened to each album last week and I am loving them — they are so chill, and great background music, but when you hear the hook, of, say, “Clocks” or “Losing My Religion,” you realize how modern it actually is!

I made this little music video so you could hear a sample — this is the Rolling Stones! (This song is a bit slower than the others.)

My favorite album is definitely “Modern Classics,” but that’s just my taste in music. It has songs like “Hallelujah,” “Ray of Light,” and “Come As You Are.” Yes, I will stretch out to Nirvana, thank you very much! Even though I’m not generally into rock, the Rock Classics album is still bad ass. And you can’t go wrong with The Beatles! There is also U2, Coldplay, and more in the works (Bob Marley, Radiohead, and Indie Classics, which I’m really excited about).

What I liked is that even though all the albums were super chill, they didn’t make me want to fall asleep at my desk. Definitely good for instructors (I’ll be adding these songs to my spinning playlists for the cool-down), but really just good for anyone who wants some background tunes while they are working but gets distracted by words or songs that get stuck in your head (like me).

And the good news is, I have a copy of each CD to give away! That means I get to make your week if you are one of THREE lucky winners! Here’s how to enter:

1. Leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite way to bliss out! (Mine is reading magazines and doing my nails!)

2. Be sure you’re following me on Twitter and Tweet about this giveaway @ShedItAndGetIt (make sure you include the link to this post)…and then comment on THIS POST letting me know you did.

3, Write about this giveaway on your blog or Facebook profile and include the link to this post…and then comment on this post letting me know!

You can enter EACH way, EACH DAY till Friday Feb. 19 at 6:00 PM. Just be sure to leave me a comment every time you enter; I’ll select a random winner from the comments! If you don’t want to risk your luck, you can head to the Modern Meditations Web site to order your CD right now.

My fave way to relax is to throw on a pair of yoga or sweat pants, make a cup of Aveda tea (so good!) and sit on the couch with a blanket to watch the shows I DVRed for the week :)

I’m so psyched about these. It’s so hard to find good meditation/relazation music that doesn’t just make me want to turn it off or fall asleep.
Think this may be the product of meditation and yoga reaching more people? I sure hope so! People need to chill.

Thanks for the giveaway and the info!

My favorite way to bliss out is put on baggy sweats and watch a movie or tv episode that I have seen many times before (I’d sooner rewatch than watch a new movie) with a glass of wine and a platter of snacks – cheese, crackers, veggies, hummus.

This doesnt really have to do with the contest, but I wanted to tell you that I went to a spin class a few months ago and the teacher did something that I LOVED! During one song, she asked everyone to yell out the word “switch” at least once, it didn’t matter if a bunch were in a row or not. Everytime you heard the word, you had to switch positions. Everyone did which ever position they wanted, so not everyone was in sync but it was so much fun! I don’t know if it’d be as fun with a small class but I thought I’d tell you anyway! It was one of my favorite things, and that was the only time its happened at a class I went to!

I love to either paint my toenails while watching my favorite tv show or just curling up on the couch watching my favorite tv show with no electronic devices in my hand (laptop, iphone, etc)

My favorite way to chill is by reading a fashion magazine. My fave is Glamour and whenever it arrives I run to my room and lay on my bed like a 12-year-old girl, on my stomach with my legs in the air, and immediately start reading cover to cover.
