Do Your Part: Recycle Your Shizz

by Rachel on February 25, 2010

Sometimes you just have to give back, whether it’s helping old ladies cross the street or helping the planet stay green for years to come! Even though it’s not quite Spring, I’ve gone into Spring Cleaning mode. Here are some a super painless way to streamline your life and do your part…

Recycle old gift cards! Since your Christmas gift cards probably have low balances, now is a good time to think about recycling them. I was going through my wallet the other day and realized I had about a million floating around in there. And it’s not just gifts; I have a ton of store refund cards as well. According to a company called Earthworks, 75 million pounds of PVC material enter our waste stream every year. Um…gross.

But now you can collect the used cards and mail them to Earthworks, which recycles them and turns them into a new, earth-friendly type of plastic.

Recycle your yoga mat. If you’re a zen kinda girl, check out RecycleYourMat.com, which is just exactly the kind of Web site I dig. You can either drop off your mat or send it to them to either donate or recycle. You’ll also get a 20 percent off discount on new yoga goodies!

Recycle your running shoes. There are so many great organizations that collect shoes these days, but one of the easiest ways is to check your local running shop for a drop-off site! Or you can hit Run the Planet for a list of programs. Again, they will either be donated or recycled…amazing!

Recycle whatever else you want! Check out Freecycle to find what people near you want…or to get what you might need.

I’m on a major de-clutter kick right now and it feels so good! I’m heading to the post office this afternoon to start with my gift cards, and my white-girl running shoes are gonna go this weekend. Better to let some white girl benefit from them, no?

I really need to recycle some old (whit girl) running shoes. There is no need to have 4 pairs of shoes I’ll never, ever wear again.

Thanks for the great post. Never knew that all my unwanted junk could be recycled like that. Thank you for opening my eyes to some great websites and hopefully de-cluttering my house!

I belong to my local Freecycle. I love the idea of NOT throwing everything out and although I haven’t gotten anything from it, I know it will come in handy the next time I move. Thanks for the tips Earth Mama! :)
