New Month, New Goals: April

by Rachel on March 31, 2010

OMFGEEEEZY. It’s April!! It’s time for some new goals!

GET IT GIRL First up, I should check in on all the Madness that were my March goals.

De-clutter. I ROCKED OUT on this goal, as is evidenced by my recipes, office/gym/discotheque, oatmeal station, and closet! I actually get kind of a high from doing this, so I’m going to keep de-cluttering something else each week.

100 Push-ups Challenge. I did keep this goal, but once I started working on my proposal, I admit, I slacked off on adding the reps each week. However, I did a max push-up test on Tuesday and I can do 10 push-ups from my toes. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue on with the challenge, just because I miss lifting weights with dumbbells (and I was often too sore to do both) but I love push-ups, so I’ll keep doing them — and doing them from my toes! (I’m really proud of that.)

Cook a paella with scallops. This did not happen. Yep….FAIL. I got a great recipe and and the scallops are chilling in my freezer…I just didn’t have the time or energy to get a paella pan and the right rice. Ehhh…I finished my proposal. The paella can wait.

I also should say that some of my other past goals like taking time to relax, doing Core Fusion, and keeping a food journal are still going on and are now just habits. I love when that happens! Goals should stick with you even when the month is over, much like how that STD sticks with you long after the frat party ends.

Moving right along…

Audrey Hepburn Umbrella

This month, I’m taking into account that my proposal is done, so I have a considerably smaller workload. I’m going to try to enjoy that because I don’t expect it to last too long. Here’s what’s going down this month.

Read more books. I have been reading since I was three years old and to this day could spend hours in Barnes and Noble. I am a total bookworm. But now that I’m older, and have moved on from Baby-Sitters’ Club books, the problem is just starting the books. Once I do, I’m always hooked/in love/obsessed. Biggest barriers: Not starting the damn things. Reward: Being more well-read and therefore a fabulous dinner party companion.

Seriously break up with Ziplocs. My family has a problem. I’m over it. It’s a waste of money and waste of plastic. But this actually goes hand-in-hand with another goal, which is to pre-cut my produce once or twice a week. Biggest barriers: I often grab a Ziploc and/or avoid pre-chopping because I hate digging through the cupboard to find a piece of Tupperware and  matching lid. So…I need more reusable containers. I’ve been saving a lot of plastic food containers from things like feta cheese crumbles or jars from almond butter and salsa to start using for food storage. Biggest reward: Saving the planet, saving money, having lots of veggies ready to go.

Core Fusion/Pilates Challenge 2.0. The February Core Fusion Challenge (40 minutes of a Core Fusion DVD four times a week) was a great experience, so I’m excited to do it again. This time, the motivation is coming in the form of summer and my bikini. I bought the Pure Arms and Abs DVD and I’m starting this afternoon. I’ll post more details on the plan later! Biggest barriers: Wanting to skip strength training to do more cardio. But honestly, while I love cardio for my head and heart, I’m kinda over the long-ass sessions. I really love strength training now and am satisfied with a good 25 minute run or spin most days. Reward: A strong and flat core, more toned arms and thighs, and tons of confidence when I put on my bikini in June! I know Core Fusion works, so I really am less worried about motivation this time around.

Food/culture goal (New Year’s Resolutions!): Really get into Michigan food and culture! Michigan summers are bomb and already, things are getting good on a local level. For the next few months, I’m going to try to take advantage of more local foods, restaurants, and other opportunities, and I’ve got Leah to help me out with this goal. (I’m also reading How to Read a French Fry, a book on food science, for my Res.)

I have a lot of things on my mind that I’d like to improve, so I also decided to make a list of mini-goals. These are the things I sort of already do or won’t require TONS of effort but that I want to make sure I stay on top of!

  • Buy organic! I’ve switched to organic milk, eggs, some meat, and most produce. I’m really proud of this and I want to keep making the effort and do it as much as possible.
  • Continue to beat boredom by trying new brands, foods, meals, workouts, routes, etc.
  • Get back into stand-up comedy. I’ll probably expand on this in a later post, but yes…my roots are in comedy writing and stand-up. (Yeah…that’s what happens when you’re the smart fat girl. Then I just lost weight and suddenly my inner slut was enabled by my outer beauty.)

I think April is going to be pretty damn good. What are your goals??

Hump Day Treat

My ice cream brings all the boys to the yard…even when it’s miniature!

This recipe is from So Easy and it really is so easy. It’s three ingredients: vanilla wafers, chopped dark chocolate, and vanilla ice cream. I was excited to make it, but I figured since it was so simple, it was the kind of thing I (and you) could really personalize. I mean, there are some great flavors of dark chocolate out there…and ice cream…the wheels were turning!

First, I realized that for the vanilla wafers, I wanted to find an all-natural version. Of course, the box in our pantry that my mom bought recently had high fructose corn syrup and a ton of other crap in it. I had no idea if all-natural vanilla wafers existed, and was even less sure if I could find them without going to Whole Foods, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found these Country Choice Organic ones at Kroger!

Next, I knew that the chocolate needed to be this Vosages Black Pearl Exotic Candy Bar I bought last week after Leah recommended it. It’s dark chocolate plus ginger, wasabi, and black sesame seeds.

Vosages Black Pearl

I had already eaten some on F*ck Calorie Friday and knew it was a winner.

For the ice cream, my first choice was coconut ice cream. It’s non-dairy, which would make my stomach happy, and, well, I love coconut. And it sounded like it would be perfect with the Black Pearl bar. But unfortunately Kroger did not have coconut ice cream. Argh. OK. My next thought was Haagen Dazs Five, which I also love…but they were out of vanilla! I thought the ginger might work, but it made me a little nervous. So…that’s how I ended up with Edy’s.

edy's ice cream

I went for the minis because it was cheaper and because I didn’t need a gallon of ice cream calling my name from the freezer. I hate when my food talks to me…and I hate when I listen!

I was feeling pretty self-righteous about my organic vanilla wafers until I opened the box and realized HOLY SHIT — they were tinier than the last guy I slept with!

SO LITTLE

(Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don’t Facebook message me if you think I’m talking about you.)

Because the cookies were so small, I realized, I didn’t need an ice cream scoop…I didn’t even need a spoon. I was thrilled because it meant I got to break out my favorite kitchen tool: the melon baller!

BALLIN’ OUTTA CONTROL!!!

Actually what was outta control was the fact that I had put the ice cream in the microwave to soften it and then it got too soft. Hmm….again…like the last guy I slept with. Weird!!!

OK, so you’re supposed to assemble the sandwiches and then roll the sides in the chopped dark chocolate. These were so little, I just decided to put the chocolate in the sandwich.

It was at that point I realized these were to ice cream sandwiches like sliders are to burgers.

Because I had over-softened the ice cream, things were quickly spiraling downward and I was making a huge mess, so I stopped at six and put them in the freezer. Later in the night I took them out and…HEYOH!

Oh…I was sorta hoping they grew while they were in the freezer like some sort of science experiment. Oh well. Pretty cute and damn tasty at that…maybe size doesn’t matter!

(It totally does.)

Lemme Work It: 3/31/10

by Rachel on March 31, 2010

This day has been SO awesome. I’m just going to break it down for you.

10. This weather is just not stopping! Even warmer than yesterday…it’s fabulous.

9. New post on The Frattiest Sorostitute: Glenn Beck vs. Kappa Sigma. Did the fraternity brothers really tow 53 cars belonging to people on UCF’s campus to see the conservative speak? And people say Greeks never do anything good…

8. You guys had awesome suggestions for coconut oil! I love how many people use it on their hair and bodies. And a lot of you just use it like butter. Awesome…can’t wait to try all these suggestions, and I was excited to hear a few virgins are planning to try it for the first time.

7. While I worked this morning, I chatted with Leah for three hours about blogging, our plans for spring and summer fun, stand-up comedy, and boys. This whole “done with the proposal so I have more time on my hands” means I’m once again giving G-chat the kind of attention I usually give my G-spot and it is great to be back!

6. Despite my great mood, I was still feeling like kicking some ass, so I did kickboxing today. My goal was to do it at least once this week, so I did two segments (20 minutes) on my kickboxing DVD. Great workout!

5. After kickboxing, I was in the mood to keep things going, so I hopped on my spinning bike for another 25 minutes. Today’s power song was an oldie but a goodie from Rihanna. It sounds slow but those jumps are HARD.

4. I did the whole thing in my running skirt. I haven’t worn it in ages but it was so warm out today. Kicking ass in a skirt is always fun — and being able to ride a bike in a skirt is why I love home workouts.

3. It’s HUMP DAY! That means a treat is coming.

2. Went to the library and got new books! (Plus put about ten more on hold, so I’ll be set for a while.)

1. Once again, everything I want to make for dinner is missing one ingredient. It’s time for a grocery store run. And since Jacki and I had discussed a friend-date tonight, that means we’re going to have another grocery friend-date. Two of my favorite things; I couldn’t be happier.

Peace out, homehs!

Getting It: Bikini Shopping

So yesterday, I decided to suck it up and do the worst task ever: shop for a bathing suit. Or, as I like to call it, “Violently assaulting your self-confidence, taping its mouth shut, then slaughtering it and burying it in the desert so it would take an entire episode of CSI to figure out [...]
