De-Cluttering the Bedroom

by Rachel on March 27, 2010

With March nearly over, I knew it was time to take on the final de-cluttering project: my bedroom closet. This has been something I’ve avoided for months, but it needed to happen. The closet was simply unlivable. Piles and piles and piles of clothes made it impossible to open. (I have no real dresser, as I prefer to have a huge TV and small couch in my room.) Getting dressed was a huge hassle; if I wanted to wear my black skinny pants, I had to drag everything out and dig through the pile. I honestly didn’t know what was even in there, at the bottom. However, last week I couldn’t find my new Shox or my white-girl running shoes and I had a feeling they were in there…and since the weather is getting nicer, I need my white-girl running shoes. That was the final straw.

I taught spinning this morning, stopped on the way home and picked up a new bin for my winter clothes and a small shelf for the closet, and then came home. I changed my clothes, but didn’t shower. I knew I was about to get really dirty as I attempted to make things clean.

This is the “before” picture, but unfortunately, it doesn’t tell you much, as I couldn’t even open the closet far enough to get a picture inside of it.

I had a snack, turned on DVRd “Chelsea Lately,” and went to fucking town.

First I dragged everything out and separated it into piles.

(This is not everything.)

(Nor is this everything. I also found a few gay guys in there.)

There was so much crap in there, I could barely get through my room. I was seriously finding floppy disks (!?!?) from classes I took in 2003. There was a whole set of rolling drawers with beauty products and useless technology…old papers I wrote in high school…a can of coconut milk…several sets of dumbbells…I mean, really, it was just awful.

But once you get going, you just go. I threw stuff away, pulled out recyclables, hauled out all the dirty laundry, folded the sweaters for storage, and asked myself several times how on earth I acquired so much crap.

I hung up all my nicer clothes and then I spent a lot of time cleaning out my under-the-bed bins where I keep most of my everyday clothes (yoga pants, tanks and tees, sports bras, socks, undies, etc.). I moved a bunch of stuff to the re-purposed rolling drawers. I found a home for my accessories. I purged a bunch of beauty products (though not all — that’s a whole other project). I rearranged, removed, and reduced. I was home alone and just in a total frenzy.

This is how a closet should look…

Then I vacuumed, bleached, and air freshened and opened the window to let the spring air come in!

By this point, I had begun to resemble the Tasmanian Devil. I headed to the kitchen, frothing at the mouth, where I continued on with my cabinets. Good-bye moldy kiwis and rock-hard oranges; hello organized bags of dried fruit and flax seeds! (I’ve begun saving old containers from things like coffee, protein powder, and yogurt so I can turn them into organizers.) I cleaned and de-cluttered obsessively for five hours.

BTW — The Shox and white-girl running shoes were not in there. They were in the foyer closet; I found them when I pulled out the vacuum at the end of the project. FML.

I’m wiped out, but I’m still so happy I did it!

Now I’m off to relax with “Women’s Health” and “Fitness” in my fresh and clean bedroom! Have a great Saturday!

amazing! my room always looks like a tornado came through. But I am inspired to actually organize rather than just hide.

Ahhh I’m striving for some organization as I just moved 1,000 miles and everything’s a big hot mess. UGH!
