Don’t Pour That Sugar…

Good Sunday morning! Just a reminder that today is the last day for this week’s Outside the Box Challenge.

Remember, this week’s challenge was to go an entire day without added sweeteners. We’re defining added sweetener as any form of concentrated sweetener, natural or not (this means maple syrup, agave, and honey are all no-nos!). This also includes artificial sweetener. Whole fruit is okay, as is any other non-concentrated food that happens to taste sweet. Watch for processed foods with added sweetener, though.

I’ve been eating less sugar over the past few weeks and I’ve definitely stopped craving it so much. (And trust me when I say giving up the artificial stuff will make you stop craving it in a major way.) The only thing I sweeten now is my morning cup of coffee and my smoothies.

Skipping smoothies wasn’t too hard, so I made my goal this week to not add any sugar or sweetened creamer to my coffee. It wasn’t easy because I like super, super sweet coffee, but Leah encouraged me to savor the creaminess of it instead of the sweetness. I experimented with cream, whole milk, and coconut milk, and really have begun to get used to a more bitter cup of coffee. I am definitely going to keep at this to find the perfect cup that works for me.

I also ate my Greek yogurt without honey, but I found a way to offset the tanginess by sauteing fruit in coconut milk first and then mixing that in with the yogurt. I had that last night for a bedtime snack topped with some cinnamon and macadamia nuts and it was awesome! Again, it was super creamy, and the warm fruit made it plenty sweet enough.

Oh no! How could I have forgotten about this?! I really wanted to participate :(
Well, I guess the good thing is I don’t need a challenge to give up added sweeteners right? I can still do it on my own. I’ll send you my thoughts after I do it though because you inspired me to try :)

So what’s the deal with the Sorostitute blog? I am pretty sure you are the inspiration, lol, but are you actually contributing? Sorry if I missed you talking about it – I just clicked on your link for the first time today and it looks new.

AMEN to appreciating coffee for it’s creaminess rather than sweetness. I used to drink coffee with skim milk and 2 packets of Splenda (gag). I’ve switched to coffee with heavy cream and 1/2 packet of stevia. I’m hoping to get down to no sweetener one of these days, but I don’t think I could *ever* go back to skim milk. Not only is heavy cream 450o847 times more delicious, but I kind of get off on the fact that I’m using full (saturated) fat without the slightest guilt.

Oh I DEFINITELY get off when I buy full fat creamer or when I ask at Starbucks if they have whole milk. It’s kind of amazing actually.
