Press Play: The Knocks

by Rachel on May 31, 2010

Memorial Day? Well…this song is about not remembering.

Do not ask questions — just go to Amazon and download Blackout (the single). Trust me on this one; I’ve been pretty much unable to stop listening to it on repeat.

“Passed out waiting for your rescue

Last night, had me in the best mood

You say we had a conversation

But all I remember is…”

I CAN’T STOP.

Then go find the rest of their great (free) stuff on Drop and hit up their Twitter page for links to tons of remixes.

You can thank me later.

Happy Memorial Day! And happy summer!!

Today I thought I’d share some tips on how to summerize things that are a drag to do inside when the weather is gorgeous: work and working out!

First, go work outside! I was dying to do this as soon as the temperature started to climb. First, I just started working from my back deck. When Leah visited this weekend, we set up shop together.

It was wonderful! And if you don’t have a big deck, you can still set up outside a Starbucks or even at a picnic table in your local park.

But I know that a lot of times it’s impossible to work outside because of the glare on the computer. That’s why this year I sucked it up and bought a Compushade.

I ordered it on Wednesday, it came Friday, and after following the somewhat complicated directions for five minutes, (not super complicated, but more complicated than I expected), I was all set!

If you don’t want to do a Compushade, then save your non-computer work for the great outdoors. Somehow, reading stuff for law school is a little better when you’re sucking in Vitamin D at the same time!

If you can’t take your work outside, take your workout outside. Last week I took my computer outside and did Core Fusion Sport via Yoga Vibes under a big tree.

My advice: wear clothes that can get dirty. During the jump backs, I got so covered in grass, it looked like all of Manchester United had taken me down. (I wish.) You may have to ignore looks from neighbors but it’s so nice to get fresh air and warm weather during your DVD workout! It’s definitely helping me look forward to doing it.

Next I decided to take my spin bike outside. (Mini-lesson: do not attempt to carry a fully-assembled 40+ pound bike up a flight of stairs by yourself. Just. Don’t. Do. It.) I put it in the garage to be rolled out (ROLL OUT!) into the driveway to spin in the breeze! You probably can’t do this if you have a thousand-pound treadmill, but you can take your strength training equipment and mat outside, grab a jump rope for cardio, and work it in your driveway or yard.

It’s hard to get motivated to do anything indoors in the summer but it’s surprisingly easy to get excited about it when you add in the novelty of being outside.

And that’s where I’m heading now. I’ve got books to read and work to do…but I have no problem doing it because I’m doing it in the great outdoors! Have a great, great holiday!

Lesson #4: How to Cook a Bagel Thin

by Rachel on May 30, 2010

My mom brought home Thomas Bagel Thins and I decided to give them a try because you know that, for me, heaven is a Sunday morning bagel that’s big enough to rest my head on for a carb-induced nap.

Um, apparently, 1/3 of the calories means 1/3 of the carb density and…1/3 of the cooking time.

Toast lightly, carb fiends! I burned up two of these this morning.

Once you get past that, they are pretty tasty and bagel-ish. Ish. They taste like bagels but they just aren’t as thick and fluffy…and that’s precisely why I eat bagels. They deliver the “Everything” flavor, but they don’t deliver the bagel experience. I would use them more for sandwiches that taste good on bagels, like tuna or egg and cheese, rather than a cream cheese extravaganza. They are dece, but the long ingredients list makes me certain they won’t become a pantry staple.

I must say though, they taste a lot better than the sandwich thins, which, as far as I can tell, provide less flavor and nutrition than a Communion wafer. I mean, no, you can’t put roast beef on the good Lord, but those sandwich thins are vile.

Maybe it’s the nerdy journalism major in me, but I love a sexy anchorman! Now because they have a reputation to protect, it’s really hard to find half-naked pics of journalists. They have to have credibility and all. (Which is why I never wanted to be a “real” journalist!) So today we can drool over [...]
