Facebook and Me: It’s Complicated

by Rachel on May 20, 2010

All right…I’m having major, major issues with Facebook right now.

First, there is the privacy issue. Now, personally, I don’t worry about my privacy as much as some people because I’m not trying to keep keg stand pictures out of Google search, but the whole thing, to me, really just speaks to the attitude of Facebook’s creators.

OK so that’s really annoying but then Facebook deleted all my profile information last week. If this hasn’t happened to you yet, basically, you say yes to one innocuous-seeming question and it turns all your music, books, movies, etc. into links to the fan pages. So if something doesn’t have a fan page, then it just won’t accept it. Well, sorry, but many of my interests (grooming, socializing) and music (black-sounding girls, gay-sounding boys, and the kind of rap that white girls like) don’t have fan pages. So…all my shit is gone. And after an hour last night, I gave up trying to just delete this section entirely. To do that, I have to UNLIKE every single fan page that I’ve liked over the past year. Not worth it. So now my profile is about half as entertaining as it was before.

The other reason I’m pissed is that Facebook won’t let me change the name of my fan Shedding It fan page. This is driving me crazy. I have 500 fans that I worked for. I really like being able to interact with people on Facebook; I don’t want to lose them (you!!). But I don’t want to keep updating a fan page that is branded wrong. And I don’t want to create a whole new page.

My first instinct was to just say, “Fuck it,” and cancel my account. I’ve heard that it’s nearly impossible and that the recent Southpark episode about Facebook was eerily accurate, but the bigger problem is that I can’t cancel my account. And this is when Facebook becomes like Wal-Mart. You know it sucks, but you don’t know what else to do because you feel like you can’t afford to have integrity.

And if I cancel my account, I know I won’t be able to connect with as many people. And that’s a bummer. I like Facebook because it really does allow people to find me and find my blog. I like being accessible. That’s my thing, and it’s mainly because of social media tools.

So! Here’s what I’m doing for the time being…

I am going to stop updating the Shedding It fan page. I don’t want to confuse people.

I am going to continue to use my personal Facebook profile primarily to share blog links as well as the sort of short one-liners, links, and convos that I share on Twitter. I use my profile more like my Twitter, and that’s good for us because I know not all of you are on Twitter.

SO — if you were a fan and want to stay updated, you can just friend me on Facebook! I know that might seem ca-RAZY, but it’s fine. I actually like it because I like seeing what you guys are doing, especially when you aren’t a blogger. So you can get all up in my mini-feed. And I’ll get up on yours too…at least until you click “remove.”

One caveat — I’m terrible about responding to Facebook messages and DMs on Twitter. I read them on my phone and then never go back to the site and respond. The best way to get at me is definitely to e-mail me!

All right…catch me on the FB! Over and out!

Hell yeah! I’ve been wanting to friend you for a long time. ;) and as for replying to messages, I do it all the time from my phone. In fact I’m on my phone now. Whatever you do, don’t create one of those “mobile” sites that automatically transfers us because your new site is working perfectly on my iPhone now. :)

Melissa — I CAN reply from my phone, I just choose not to! Those little keys aren’t good for your wrists and hands!!

LOVE the Facebook logo you put together. That made my day.

And I hate how they took pages I was fans of and put them in my interests/music/etc. Um, no, just because I said I “like” your brother’s band doesn’t mean they are in my list of favorite music.

feverishly hunting down that SP episode on hulu as we speak, er, as I type.
Um, like I tweeted back at you the other day … facebook is the new … MYSPACE.
I use to LOVE facebook. Now it gives me a brain-ache unless I view it from my phone. My phone simplifies the whole thing down to status updates only, bingo!

Ok, well if you’re putting it out there girl, I’m totally friending you because I just love your little face! I only status update once a day or less, so you won’t be annoyed by me … I promise. (names Rachael Taylor by.the.way.) and you are my blogging inspiration! (I whispered that last part, could ya tell?)

Of course you posted about this today when I was THIS CLOSE to deactivating my FB account completely, after getting one Farmville/Mafia Wars update too many and an email from an ex asking if I “unfriended him”. What are we, 12?

But then I figured out how to hide all of those annoying Farmville/Mafia Wars updates and decided to completely own unfriending him in 140 characters or less (yes my Twitter addiction comes in handy sometimes).

Plus I am an admin for the fan page of one of my favorite rappers and would hate to let him down…

“…. the kind of rap that white girls like”.

I cannot stop laughing. You crack me up. But seriously Facebook really sucks. How come there isn’t a fan page for “booty texting” ? Because that is one of my activities!
