Beauty Booty: Spend vs. Skip

by Rachel on May 27, 2010

Good Thursday morning! Today I wanted to share two quick reviews on two beauty products with you! They are kind of pricey, so read on before you go spending your hard-earned cash…

First, a reader asked me a few weeks ago to check out the new Crest 3D Whitening mouthwash so I did! I’ve been using it for three weeks now, morning and night.

The verdict? SKIP IT.

It’s wildly overpriced — that bottle is teeny tiny — and I haven’t seen a noticeable difference. I actually saved the receipt and I am going to take the company up on the “If you don’t like it, we’ll send you a refund!” offer. No one can beat Crest Whitestrips, but I have yet to find a decent competitor for the Listerine Whitening Pre-Brush Rinse (and I’ve tried many others)! The Listerine works within a few days. And I will be buying another bottle of that as soon as I get through this one!

Next up, I wanted to share this new SPF before your summer officially kicks off this weekend! I love me some Neutrogena even though I hate wearing sunscreen. So when I saw that the newest Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunblock promised it “looks invisible and feels like water on the skin”…I was unable to talk myself out of spending $12 on a bottle.

The verdict? DAMN, IT’S TRUE!

Sorry you guys, but it’s amazing. It feels like nothing. I actually kept putting on more because it didn’t feel like I was putting anything on. It barely even smells like sunscreen. Because it’s so pricey, though, I’m going to make vanity less expensive and only use it for outdoor events when I care about looking good. Like…a date at a baseball game or a picnic with friends when the camera is coming along. I wouldn’t want to sweat it all off during an outdoor workout. But the good news is, you can get a $2 off coupon on the Neutrogena Web site.

One other quick beauty-related note: a few of you echoed my sadness at the great Maybelline Lash Stylist having been discontinued. You can still get it on e-bay! Tons and tons of discontinued cosmetics and perfume right there. So all is not lost!

Have a great day!

I love Cover Girl Lash Blast. It’s a great replacement for the Maybelline if you want to give it a whirl.

Oooh I like Lash Blast but I don’t think it compares! However, now that I use Latisse, I probably shouldn’t even worry about it. That stuff is CRAZY!

I bought the Crest mouthwash thinking it was the one that you recommended and it was on sale! Sad to say, its not :( Once I finish it I will get the Listerine one

OMG, I tried the Neutrogena Sheer (not the liquid) and it was awesome, but then I couldn’t find it in Walgreens and tried the Walgreens brand version–it was just as good and I think it was $4 cheaper. I could put it on in after my shower, go about my morning grease-free, and hit the pool at noon, which I couldn’t do with the Target knockoff (unless I wanted to feel like a basted chicken).

So yeah, Walgreen’s Neutrogena knock-off rocked!

Laura — I’m DEF down with the sunscreen knockoffs. For basic laying out or exercising outside, I use Coppertone Sport Spray and I tried the Wal-Mart version this week…$5 and it works the same!! With something I go through so fast in the summer, yeah, I’m not a label whore!

I don’t think this new stuff has a knock-off yet!! Thanks for the tip on the original Sheer/Walgreens though!!

Unrelated to your beauty post, but I saw this ad and got a kick out of it. Thought it might make you giggle, too.

Thanks for the sunscreen tip! My ghostly white complexion definitely needs as much protection as it can get. I’ve been looking at some new options.

Thanks for reviewing the crest mouthwash. I used it and saw no difference, so I will definitely try out the listerine now.
