Taste Testing: Vega Shake & Go Smoothie Powder

by Rachel on June 8, 2010

A few weeks ago, the brand Vega contacted me and asked me if I’d like to try their new smoothie powder. I’ve actually been trying not to accept a lot of products for review lately, because so many times it’s just something I’d never buy, but I’ve been on the hunt for a new smoothie powder, so I accepted this one!

Vega is def a brand I dig anyway. They are one of those smaller healthy food companies that is into sustainability, social media, and just general good food karma!

There are four flavors of the new smoothie powder, but I went with the chocolate.

Vega is all about plant-based products, so this is actually a vegan protein powder. You know I love me some hemp, but there is also green pea protein and sprouted brown rice protein. It also has a bunch of “green” stuff: kale, spinach, broccoli, spirulina, etc.) So you know…really just all sorts of plants and green shizz!

Two heaping tablespoons of the powder has 120 cals, 3 grams of fat, 12 g protein, 5 g fiber, and 6 g sugar. There’s also a good dose of OMGs and probiotics. (I mean, according to the package there is; who really knows what all that means?!)

I experimented with a couple different smoothie combinations but my winning pick was the powder mixed with water, frozen banana, coconut oil, and macadamia nut butter.

I actually really liked it! I thought it tasted a lot better than the Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods brands of chocolate protein powder. It definitely tastes earthy, which is sort of hard to explain and may mean some people don’t like it, but to me, it just had a richer taste than your basic whey protein powder. If you’ve ever had Amazing Grass Chocolate Superfood Powder (which I love, by the way), it’s similar in taste to that.

It also had a thicker quality to it too that reminded me of fudge in some way. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely not the same as eating a brownie, but something about the consistency was very fudge-brownie-esque.

Come to think of it, the whole “earthy + chocolate” flavor of powders like these does seem more along the lines of, uh, other brownies.

My only issue with it is the price: at $24 for a bag it’s a lot more expensive than the basic whey protein powder I’ve used before. There are ten servings in the package so you can do the math; I’m not sure it’s an affordable option if you drink a ton of smoothies.

If you’re a vegan looking for something, this might be a good route to go! And personally, I do like the added health benefits it offers. Since I’ve cut way back on my smoothie drinkage in the past couple months anyway, I can definitely see myself ordering another bag when this one runs out. I just know I can’t drink it every day because it would be an expensive habit!

You can head to the Vega website to order! Also, they are running this Where Will Your Smoothie Take You? contest right now that you might want to enter if you’re heading on a cool vaca. You can win $25,000, which means you could basically eat champagne and caviar smoothies any time you please. I would enter, but I never win contests like this because apparently, healthy living companies get alllllll freaked out if you say, “Hey, I should win because I can explain to people that eating that other company’s product is like using a vibrator!”

Go figs.

I JUST tried the chocolate Vega too…I’m not usually into protein powders at all but I liked this one. My best combo was with almond milk, frozen berries and flaked coconut.

I have seen this protein powder all over the blog world lately and it has definitely caught my interest. I have yet to try a vegan protein powder that I actually enjoy the flavor of. I need to try this! Thanks for the review. :)
