Lesson #7: How to Be a Chic Geek

by Rachel on June 14, 2010

After I bought my big-ass Nikon a few months ago, I realized I needed a way to tote it around. I was just tossing it around in my purse like it was no big thang. Uh…when you have a piece of equipment that costs a month’s rent, you shouldn’t abuse it.

But I also didn’t want to be “that girl,” carrying a so-not-cute camera bag to nice events I might want to photograph. Plus I like to minimize the amount of bags I’m carrying on any given day, so a purse plus a camera bag didn’t seem like a great option for me.

Luckily I found a solution via Amazon! The Vintage Parisian Style Top Flip Camera Bag was exactly what I needed.

What I love about this bag is that it’s a bag I’d actually carry!

It’s totally my style, unlike many other camera bags. Call me crazy, but I’d prefer to not look like a tourist when I’m out to dinner at a trendy restaurant!

But most important, it’s functional. Inside there’s a soft barrier so that your camera fits nicely on one side. It’s protected from the rest of the junk in your purse and it won’t slide around.

(Taking a picture of your camera in its bag means you cannot use your camera…pardon my Palm Pre shot.)

So it’s super convenient and cute! But best of all, when you ask someone to take a picture of you and your friends…and you reach for this cute bag…and they are expecting a girly little point-and-shoot…and you pull your DSLR…and they react like you’ve just pulled out a big black dildo (true story)…you’ll die laughing!

Genius! Style and practicality. That’s a great bag! Love the color too!

I have one of those dorky Swiss camera bags for my Canon, and seriously, I feel pretty lame walking around with that thing on, especially at nice events or out to dinner with friends. I totally get where you’re coming from.

Kudos!

How about a post on cute bags for college/grad students with tons of shit to lug — books, notebooks, laptop occasionally…??? All I have is my old North Face and pardon me for not wanted to look like a mountain climber. I’ve been toying with the idea of an old school khaki canvas backpack with brown leather trim, more chic than forest ranger, and under $100. Have you seen one anywhere? Or have other ideas?

BIG THANKS!
xoxo

How perfect is that bag? I hate lugging around my big ass camera case, so I usually take my point and shoot most places, which makes me sad. Thanks for the tip.

I feel supremely dorky but have to admit that I have already placed my order. It’s not like we live in the same town and are going to run into each other all matchy-matchy…
