Today

by Rachel on August 31, 2010

August 31, 1998 was my first day of eighth grade. It was a half day of school, and when I got home, my mom was waiting for me on the front porch. She asked me how my day went and then she said she was sorry…and I knew. I knew that my dad had died.

If you haven’t had a chance yet, today is a good day for you to read my very best article. Writing it was hard; sharing it on my blog was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

I rarely talk about this loss because it’s not a frequent source of pain or a notable absence. But it is worth mentioning, because it’s a part of my life and part of who I am. I’m half-black and a half-orphan. I’ve owned it.

This is also why I get pissed when people are pessimists. Like, really? Your life is so hard? Ummm, fuck you. No, life isn’t perfect all the time. It’s hard and sad and bad things happen to people who don’t deserve it. But that’s why I laugh as much as I can and don’t take things too seriously — if I lived in a shadow of grief and let myself be defined by tragedy, I would never get out of bed in the morning.

Today just reminded me that I have a very good reason to be a pessimist…and I’m not one. And if anyone is reading this blog and yet somehow still on Team Eeyore, I thought I should remind you as well. I’m real, and I feel pain, and yet I still think life is awesome. I hope you will too!

Meet the Owners 8/30/10

by Rachel on August 31, 2010

I thought things might slow down with all the “owning it” going on in the blogosphere, but I was most definitely wrong! I couldn’t wait another week to share these posts; they are so great and needed to be posted immediately. I love seeing how different bloggers are running with this idea and talking about what they need to own.

It’s good stuff.

Katherine — So broke ass she had to eat pasta after it spilled out all over the sink. Oh, man. I too will own how much food I eat off the floor if it’s expensive. I’m clumsy and poor — what can I do? I believe it strengthens the immune system.

Keri — Owning that she’s taking a long vacation. People do not take enough vacations! I hope she’s having a great time!

Tiffany — Even though she’s a life coach, sometimes her self-esteem still isn’t the best. Oh and she has major “aisle rage” and refuses to grocery shop.

Alicia — Oh, did she ever own it. When she Tweeted at me, that this was “the hardest post she’s ever written,” I knew it was going to be big. And it was — she owned the anxiety and depression she’s been battling in secret and declared that they will no longer own her. Seriously, a brave blogger.

Bridget — Owns her healthy lifestyle. This post made me say “Oh, snap!” several times. But seriously, why is it OK for people to pick on her for being healthy? She doesn’t pick on them for being unhealthy.

Maria — Sometimes she weighs herself. Sometimes she doesn’t. “I reserve the right to change my mind depending on where I am in my life and what’s working best for me.” Hell yes, you do! (All of you!)

Holly — She “sucks” as a health living blogger. Really, she just doesn’t fit the stereotypes…which is so damn refreshing!

Robyn — She’s snarky, she’s messy, she doesn’t eat meat, and she doesn’t always watch the news. I like her.

Sophie — Sophie keeps me well-fed, and I love how she owned her cooking in all these different ways. I especially love that she owns being in the kitchen. “So what if I’m like a 50s housewife?” AMEN, sister.

Nicole — People may call her a skinny bitch; she’s not sorry she has a high metabolism. I wish that was mine but props to her for owning it!

Mrs. Fatass — She ran with this concept; personally, my favorite is that she owns calling herself “Mrs. Fatass.”

Loretta — She’s breastfeeding her son (“my boobs, my business”) and watches the Kardashians. There are a lot of other good ones on the list but those are my favorites.

Suzanne — Doesn’t particularly like camping or hiking; does like spending money on clothes. And likes guys under 6 feet. I don’t personally know her except through the blogosphere, but I feel like I really know her after this post!

Nicky — She’s political. In academia. Gasp — but she’s owned it! And she’s going to be owning her PhD soon enough!

From Twitter:

Lauren (my Little Sis from Sigma Kappa): I’m not politically correct, I hate sweating so I don’t exercise, I crush on nerds, I tan. A lot. Sorry I’m not sorry.

Thanks for opening yourself up and refusing to apologize for what you do and who you are!

If you haven’t owned it yet, I think today would be a great day to do so! Grab the graphic, write your post, and holler at me when it’s all done! I think we’re all looking forward to reading more!

Lesson #20: How to Watch a Triathlon

by Rachel on August 31, 2010

This past Saturday, Eric competed in the Clear Lake International Triathlon and I went along for the ride. And…I learned a few things.

It’s not easy to be a good spectator.

Lesson #19: How to Look Great at a Toga Party

August 30, 2010
toga party

Toga parties are the quintessential Greek party, during which each sorostitute can demonstrate her own unique style while still dressing to match the overall theme. I’ve gone to a couple toga parties, and that picture is from my last one, at Lambda Chi my senior year at Michigan State. I figured that toga parties end [...]

Lesson #18: How to Be Wrong About a Guy and Be OK

August 30, 2010
chalkboard

Last week, I got an e-mail asking for some guy advice. Long story short, our girl was feeling the dating optimism when she met this guy and thought he was the big love Five…and, turns out, he’s not. She wrote, “In all your experience, any advice on how to have a healthy break/break-up (so I [...]

Meet the Owners: Julia

August 29, 2010
julia

Part of the reason I’m able to own it like I do is because I surround myself with people who encourage that sort of thing. The best at this? My friend Julia. Julia and I met in Sigma Kappa; we became roommates in Room Eight (“The Ocho”) and bonded over a love of chips and [...]

Meet the Owners

own it scroll

Are you ready for this!?! I was so excited by the great response to my post Wednesday about seriously and officially owning it. Would you look at all this owning going on? Laura — Owning her first half-marathon! She owned that she made the decision while tipsy, didn’t consult friends, and that she’s worried about [...]

Rule #5: Don’t Be a Sea Witch

August 27, 2010
ursula

When I was a kid, “The Little Mermaid” was my favorite movie. If you aren’t familiar with the plot, the sea witch, Ursula, takes Ariel’s voice in exchange for legs and a working vagina so she can bag Prince Eric. I’d give up a lot for Eric, but I’d never give up my voice. As [...]

Lesson #17: How to Be (Or Have) a Cheap Date

August 26, 2010
sausage pasta

I’m broke. I’d own this, but I can’t afford to. Seriously, moving to Houston was a great idea, but it’s left my bank account a little, well…”fucking depleted” is the best word for it. (Would anyone like to buy a really nice Marc Jacobs bag for a great price? No seriously. E-mail me.) I’m OK [...]

What Do You (Seriously & Officially) Own?

August 25, 2010
own it scroll

You guys — such passion! Such need to declare, “Sorry, I’m not sorry!” I LOVE IT. I’ve noticed a lot of bloggers just laying it out there since I shared the fourth rule last week and the thing about body image this morning, and it’s making me feel all warm inside. Not warm and fuzzy, [...]
