Baby, Give It Up to Me: Dassant Baking Mixes

by Rachel on August 18, 2011

Who wants some carbs????

dassant cinnamon bread

(I know. That wasn’t a serious question.)

A few weeks ago, Dassant reached out to me and asked me if I’d like to try some of their mixes. I was all set to receive four free samples, when I realized, “WAIT!!!!”

“Can I have some for my friends too?”

I mean, I don’t like to talk about something unless I have enough to share with everyone, you know?

So they said that I could have some to share with you too!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve tried three of the four mixes they sent me.

First, there were the truffle brownies. They were easy to make (mix + butter + an egg) and turned out perfectly — chewy, chocolately, and begging to be smothered in vanilla ice cream (which I did).

Next, there was the beer bread.

I love beer bread, and while it’s super easy to make — I have a very trusty recipe I use often —  I didn’t mind going this route. It was just beer + mix and baked up pretty quickly, thanks to my super-hot oven (side note: if anyone can recommend a good/cheap oven thermometer, I’d appreciate it). I served it with the chicken kebabs and creamy pesto dip I made a couple weeks ago and loved it. It was definitely better than my homemade stuff!

On Sunday night, in an effort to get excited for the week ahead, I made the cinnamon bread (egg + water + mix). I’m torn between the cinnamon bread and the beer bread as my favorite, but the cinnamon bread definitely wins the award for “Best In-Oven Smell.” It just smelled amazing while it was baking. The bread was even better than I expected; the flavor isn’t strong like cinnamon raisin bread — it’s more of a light, sweet, carmel flavor. It doesn’t need butter or anything; I’ve just been having it plain as a bedtime snack.

I haven’t made the pumpkin mix yet, because you actually need canned pumpkin for that, and since it’s 100 degrees outside right now, buying pumpkin just isn’t on my mind. I might save that mix for when I want to pretend it’s fall here.

Overall, I really liked all the mixes! The brownie was good, but I probably wouldn’t order it online, just because it was as good as some store mixes I love making things from scratch, but I have no problem getting help from the experts from time to time, especially when it means I can keep myself from dirtying up more measuring cups.

Give It Up to Me

Dassant has generously offered to give one of you a four-pack of the mixes of his or her choice! To win:

1. Check out the Dassant website and choose which mix you’d most like to try. (It’s not easy!)

2. Leave a comment here letting me which baking mix you’d choose and what person, dead or alive, you’d most like to spend an hour in the kitchen making said mix with (and tell me why)!

You have until Sunday 8/21 at 11 PM PST to enter; I’ll choose a winner at random from the all of the comments.

And if you can’t wait that long to try out one of their mixes, you can use the promo code RACHEL when you order on the Dassant website for 25 percent off your purchase!

Over and out!

I’m a huge sucker for pumpkin ANYTHING, so I would have to go with the pumpkin bread (although your descriptions of the other ones are making my mouth water too…) And it’s cold enough in the mornings here in the midwest I can start to pretend it’s getting towards fall….

As to who I’d like to bake it with, probably my beloved MSU roomie Alicia, who is a medical resident, meaning I never get to see and hang out with her. I could use some good bread, some good coffee, and some good girl talk!

I have to be all fall-ish and go with the pumpkin! I’ll bet it would be super yummy with some coffee for breakfast!

Who would I like to make it with? Well, if you throw the dead or alive in, I’d choose my great grandmother who passed away when I was in 6th grade. She was the sweetest lady and I’d love to have one more hour with her.

Definitely the Truffle Brownie mix! Yum!

I’d like to bake them with my dog. Even though she can’t lick the bowl, she’s nice to talk to/sing to.

BTW, your hyperlink to their site has an extra “w” in the address. :)

The Scone Mix. I love scones. I would probably throw some chocolate chips in there to make them extra tasty!

And I’d love to bake them with my mom – she passed away 14 years ago, and I still miss her every day.

Dying to try that beer bread! I’ve never attempted it, partly because I don’t/can’t bake, and partly because I always assumed it was difficult, but I’d love to try their mix (and will try your recipe as well!)

I think I’d really like to try the Beer Bread Mix and hang out with former president Lyndon B. Johnson. I know he was fond of beer and I get the feeling he had a good sense of humor which would make for one fun hour.

I’d choose the chocolate chocolate chip cake mix because um yum! And as far as who’d I want to spend an hour in the kitchen with, id have to choose Paula Deen. She is like the grandmother of my dreams. My relationship with my grandmothers was never strong nor can I really remember spending any one on one time with them. So being able to spend time and bake with her would just give me that experience I feel like I’ve missed out on. Also she’s amazing and I’m guaranteed the food will be delish!

I would love to get the beer bread because I turn 21 in 3 weeks and I’ll be able to buy beer!

I’d love to make the mix with Adam Levine from Maroon 5 because, well, we have to do SOMETHING while it’s baking, right?

I love me some carbs! I also love me some brownies, so I would have to order the Truffle Brownie Mix. I would also love to make a salad with Jake Gyllenhaal. Why? So we could smear the Truffle Brownie Mix all over ourselves for dessert!!!

I think we would like the Premium American Pie Applesauce cake mix. This is one the whole gang would enjoy. My daughter Emma and I would make this together. Then I would have to crack open the chocolate mix to bake with my other daughter Raven. Both girls are learning how to cook from recipes so this is a good way to learn and easy too.

The link wouldn’t open for me. Just an fyi. But I found the site. And I’d go for the Vanilla Pound Cake and add some cherries on top. Mmm

And I would choose to make it with my guy. I love being in the kitchen with him. It’s my second favorite thing to do that involves him.

Um, I want to say “Louisiana Banana” because just saying that out loud makes me happy. (I am easily amused.) BUT – I would love to try gingerbread because I can’t for the life of me find a from scratch gingerbread recipe that is worthy of my noms.

And, I’d love to bake with Martha Stewart. She would have the best tips… like how to protect cast iron skillets or how to make make color-coordinated shanks for the prisoner with a sense of style.

I’d use the pumpking bread mix because the first picture I saw on the site was for a Chocholate Chip pumpkin muffin top recipe….mmm mmm mm!!!

And who would I bake it with? Christian Bale. (And then I would accidently spill the baking mix all over him so he would have to take his shirt off while its in the laundry.)

I would try either the Meyer Lemon Cake or the Scone mix. I would love to bake these up with my mom. I lost her 2 years ago to a liver and kidney ailment. I moved to Michigan 2 years after graduating high school in Oklahoma. My hubby (at the time) and I rarely had the extra funds for a trip home so those visits were very few and far between. My biggest regret is not finding a way to be home more often. I would love a day of baking and talking–I’d definitely make the most of it!

Plus I think she’s the only person in the world with whom I share the same eating habits and cravings!

I would love to bake the Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cake Mix with my Dad. He was the one who taught me how to cook and I really miss him. (He died 20 years ago, when I was in my 20’s.) I know there is so much more he could have shown me if we’d had the time. He once tried to make a chocolate cake from scratch with no recipe and using chocolate syrup for the chocolate flavoring: Epic fail! I am positive using this mix would be a huge yummy improvement!!!

And I think I’d like to make it with any member of the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I’ve been talking about that show a lot lately and watching old episodes, and those people are funny. Like..owch my side hurts, now let’s go make some beer bread! funny.

I have to go with the beer bread because beer and bread are pretty much the greatest things in the world and putting them together just makes me happy. I’d love to try a new mix! As for who I’d want to bake with, my grandma who passed away when I was 9. She pretty much sucked in the kitchen, but she loved beer, and we’d probably have a great “so, we accidently got drunk and burned down the house trying to bake bread” story…..Oh, and I’d make her wear her “President of the Itty Bitty Titty Club” tshirt, and her Old Milwaukee fishing hat. Gee, wonder why people always tell me I remind them of my grandma :)

I would have to go with the applesauce cake mix. I have a huge thing for applesauce cake as well as just plain applesauce. I ate it for breakfast every morning for like two years.

I would choose Richard Feynman (the famous physicist) to bake with. He’s been my personal hero for as long as I can remember. Even though I did not end up pursuing a career in the sciences, as I originally thought I would (inspired by his books), he is such a fascinating person on a variety of subjects that I am sure it would be a fantastic hour of conversation.

I’d love beer bread, mostly because anything that can combine beer with food I’m all about. (Separately or together). I’d like to spend time in the kitchen with my grandparents (sorry, I can’t choose one…I’m not following directions). They all died when I was in high school and I didn’t get to do fun things with them like that, mostly because they were sick when I was older and because I was never thinking about their mortality. So it’d be awesome to be able to spend time with any of them.

Parkinsons made it much harder to get to know him while he was still alive. I would very much have liked to get to know the younger version, I think we’d be great friends!

(I know that this is really sappy… in all honesty, I was torn between this and a certain boy I’d start a food fight with any day… if he didn’t live across an annoyingly large continent)

I’ve tried several of the Dassant mixes in the past and loved them all! I was really happy that the Beer Bread could be made with water (I don’t like beer); it was delicious! I’ve made the Lemon Cake, the Pound Cake, and the Brownies all with wonderful results.
I’d love to have my step-Dad in the kitchen while I made the beer bread. He was such a wonderful man and I learned almost everything I knew about cooking from him. He did not uses mixes; however, I know he would love the bread. He insisted that bread be served with dinner every night. My Dad married my Mom in 1963 when she was a widow with five children (you know it takes a special man to take on that responsibility). He cooked for our family every day and I wish I had another opportunity to make something for him.
Thanks for the giveaway.

I’d have to go with Dassant’s Vanilla Scone mix. I like making my brownies and beer bread from scratch, but scones are just one of those things that I can’t be bothered to make (although I LOVE eating them).

As for who I’d like to make them with, is it too corny to say my boyfriend? It’s not that there aren’t a lot of interesting dead people I’d love to meet, it’s just that I love spending time in the kitchen with my boyfriend, and he’s been traveling for work all summer. I need some quality scone time with him!

I have two answers. One famous person, one not. Famous: George Clooney. I don’t know if he can bake, but he’s hot, and it’d make my entire decade to spend an hour with him. Or…for an equally impossible request of a not famous person…my grandmother. She died 14 years ago and I’d really like to have her back, if even only for an hour. ♥

This is an easy one for me – my mouth was watering at your description of the cinnamon bread. I looked at the others and while they did look yummy, I have good, tried and true from scratch recipes for most – I don’t have a really stellar cinnamon bread though – so cinnamon bread it would be :)

As for the hour in the kitchen to make it with anyone I wanted? I started to say my grandmother, who I miss dearly and who instilled her love of the kitchen (and the library/reading too) in me, and then I realized I would like to share that time with my best friends 3 kids – my “adopted” kids. That would give me the chance to hopefully pass along that same love of cooking that was shared with me (since we don’t have kids of our own)

I missed the giveaway but the coupon for 25% off worked for me this morning. With the free shipping offer Dassant has thru the 12th it worked out perfect. I’ve been wanting to try the mixes and we have a birthday coming up so, thanks again.
