Thirsty Thursday: Blood Orange Martinis

Blood oranges have always seemed rather exotic to me, like a fruit that’s not quite real. I feel the same way about pummelos. Eric convinced me to buy one at the grocery store last week and there was something about the hugeness of it and the green rind coupled with the pink flesh inside that reminded me of something you’d see in a level in Super Mario Brothers or something. I feel the same way about blood oranges. It’s like, if “grapples” exist now, these too must have been created in a futuristic lab, right?

But even though they are a little unsettling, I do like blood oranges and I’ve been seeing a lot of blood orange recipes lately. When I saw a bag of them at Target last night, I decided it was time to go for a seasonal treat. There really aren’t any “seasonal” cocktails once you’ve had something mixed with champagne during New Year’s Day brunch, so I figured a fruit that is truly seasonal would be nice. I came home, juiced them, and looked up some recipes!

If you like gin, I’m sure you’d like this recipe with gin and champagne, but I think gin tastes like Pine Sol, so I used this recipe as my starting point.

First I juiced about eight oranges which gave me way more juice than I needed, but honestly, it had been a long day and juicing them was kind of satisfying so I just kept going and going. Then I made two drinks by combining 4 ounces of vodka, 1 ounce triple sec, and 4 ounces of blood orange juice. I garnished with orange slices and….done!

They came out a bit strong and tart, so next time I’d sugar the rims first to take the edge off, and possibly use less vodka. (I know…rare.)

I had a blood orange margarita on NYE and it was delicious. I’ve been wanting to make things with blood oranges ever since, but my grocery store doesn’t have any yet!

LOL @ pine sol… can’t believe you don’t like gin, Rachel! I think it’s one of those liquors where the brand makes a difference… my favorite is a Tanqueray gin & tonic, with extra lime! I’ve never bought blood oranges before, but I’ll have to keep an eye out for them.

Oooh, what a fun drink! I bet raw sugar would be the perfect rimmer. Blood oranges remind me of Dexter. He eats a blood orange every day with breakfast and I can’t get that out of my head haha.

I suddenly find myself wanting to go to the store to buy some blood oranges. This looks like a really good and refreshing cocktail – especially with a sugared rim.

This sounds pretty legit. Never tried a blood orange before, but they always remind me of the Dexter opening. Would probably taste lovely with just champagne (as most things do).
