{the life} The Friday social

by Rachel on September 28, 2012

Today’s Friday social is brought to you by chicken soup, because that’s pretty much all I’ve had an appetite for this week!

This week:

  • These allergies are kicking my ass; I can barely function, so writing coherent thoughts here (or anywhere) was out of the question. I would get all excited for an idea for something I wanted to write about, I’d open up the laptop…and then I’d just wilt.
  • Mouth-breathing and hoarding tissues didn’t interfere with watching some new fall TV! I watched “Big Bang Theory” (which Eric and I started watching last month on TBS and subsequently fell in love with), “The Mindy Project” (which had me laughing out loud a lot), and then old favorites “Modern Family” and “Law & Order: SVU.”
  • I had to wonder why the entire country was like “GOD NFL JUST PAY THE REFS!” when two weeks ago, all I kept hearing was “THOSE GREEDY TEACHERS AND THEIR AWFUL UNION!” Hm. Weird.
  • My new iPhone arrived and I’m into it thus far. They made some nice improvements to mail and notifications that I really like, but I haven’t tried the new maps out yet, so I’d the jury’s still out.
  • We’re getting our bed today!

Tie the Knot [Jesse Tyler Ferguson, of “Modern Family,” started this organization to advocate for gay marriage and a more stylish America. The intro video is pretty damn cute and I’m excited to see what the bow ties look like when they come out. (Pun not intended but I didn’t remove it either so I think that’s like…second-degree punnery.)]

The chicken noodle soup resonates with me. I got a cold late last week– teaching undergrads means you are constantly opposed to new and weird germs, apparently– and so I got my boyfriend sick for the second time this month. These things hit him worse than they hit me, so I ended up making him chicken noodle soup from scratch. (From the budgetbytes.blogspot.com recipe). This is mostly notable because I’m a vegetarian and this is the first time in my life I’ve purchased meat, and probably the third I’ve ever cooked it, if you include early childhood.

He was grateful, but it is hard to cook something when you can’t taste it to check how it’s going– I can’t eat meat for medical reasons– and people at Publix were looking at me weirdly as I spent an unusually long time looking confused in the poultry section.

Tim Cook publicly apologized for the maps app: http://gizmodo.com/5947255/apple-ceo-tim-cook-apologizes-for-apple-maps-suggests-you-download-bing?utm_campaign=socialflow_gizmodo_facebook&utm_source=gizmodo_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow. So, there’s that. There’s also a really funny tumblr with screenshots: http://theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com/. As for my experience, it couldn’t locate the FARM where I am having my wedding. Ha. LOVED Mindy’s show.

My bf & I love Big Bang Theory – We spent the Summer before last watching all the seasons on DVD. I’ll randomly quote Sheldon & we’ll burst into laughter while everyone looks at us like we’re nuts.

P.S. Getting a new bed is pretty much the most amazing thing ever. Enjoy! :)

The Big Bang Theory is awesome! My dad and I have been watching it since the first season, and my brother just got on board–and he’s hooked! Like, “told ya it was awesome, why didn’t you listen to me?”

Also, as a full-on supporter of teachers’ unions (and from WI, where this stuff has been beaten to the ground), there is a difference between the public union vs the private union. The NFL is sitting on TONS of money and profit each year, but the school districts/cities/states aren’t. So I get the difference. But, yeah, it’s a sad day when we care more about the union that keeps our sports in check than the union that teaches our kids everyday.

Those infomercial characters are great! My cat so closely resembles the one in the “this woman trying to love her cat” gif I had to laugh. Clearly, some cats just don’t want love.

Hope you’re feeling better soon! We have colds too. Matt is using a neti-pot-like device with great success. I’m … a little bit afraid of it.

Re: creepshots & revenge porn, oh god, now I’m wondering about what photos my ex-husband has. Ick ick ick.

A few years ago, an online photo circulated at work: our female coworker, baring one breast in a bar (she was younger, and clearly very drunk). I worked in a male-dominated office, I should add. There was much “study” of the photo to “determine if it was really her.” I think everyone in the office saw it, except her and her boyfriend.

I felt that she had a right to know that everyone was looking at and discussing the pic. It went on for WEEKS. I was talked out of telling her by coworkers, who said it would just humiliate her to know. I never told her and I don’t think anyone else did either.

I still wonder if I did the right thing.

Ugh. We’ve had a major debate in my office this week about such things (more about creepshots than anything else). I think a lot of people think that stuff like that is harmless if the subject doesn’t know about it, so my guess is that’s why people didn’t want you to tell her about it. Not for her sake, but for theirs.

I’m seriously excited to see this new bed, we’ve been hearing about for so long! On the allergy front, have you tried shots? Only thing that works for the hubs.
