Rachel Getting Merry: Best of Christmas 2011

by Rachel on December 26, 2011

Best thing I ate: Bacon-wrapped mini franks at Eric’s family’s Christmas Eve party. Yum!

Best thing I drank: Martha Stewart’s candy cane cocktail, my contribution to the Christmas Eve party. I liked it but some biatch (she’s not in the family so I don’t mind calling her that) took a few sips and then said to me, “Don’t you think it needs something?” I said no but she would not drop it. She kept suggesting things she thought it needed in front of everyone, no matter how many times I said, “It’s not even my recipe. I just followed what Martha Stewart said to do.”

Best reaction to the drink biatch: Eric’s mom, who loudly said to the woman, “Well, my unrefined palette thinks it’s GREAT!”

Best romantic moment: Just last week I said to Eric that I thought the whole holidays-as-romantic thing was kind of overrated. But Sunday morning when he dropped me off at the Kansas City airport so I could fly to Michigan to spend the second part of Christmas Day with my family, he said “Merry Christmas” and gave me the most unbelievable kiss, and well…that’s the kind of shit holiday Lifetime Original Movies are made of, friends.

Biggest relief: Walking into my house in Grand Blanc at 9:30 PM on Christmas, approximately 12 hours after I left Wichita. It took two flights and two long car rides to get me there, but it just didn’t feel like Christmas until I was home.

Best wrapping: The gift from my mom pictured above, which was wrapped in a thick almost fabric-like paper that was covered in red glitter. It looked just like Dorothy’s ruby slippers and it contained this print from 20×200 that I have wanted for months.

Best gift I gave: It’s a tie. First, the Lego water bottle I gave to both Eric and Preston got a great reaction. Preston said that the water bottle and the $10 Panera gift card was “exactly what he wanted for Christmas” (he’d never seen it before) and Eric was a little giddy about his. Second, the Kindle Fire I bought for my mom. When I set it up for her this morning, the first thing she did was Google Facebook.

Best gift I received: So. Eric has been telling me the stories of his grandfather’s Christmas gifts and this year I got to experience it for myself. So the gifts actually come from Wonder, his cat who has been dead for ten or so years and they are delivered to each family member in a large cardboard box. Inside is a carefully-edited collection of presents that he has to have been collecting all year. Most of it is in brand-new condition, but is at least 15 years old. The thing is, Eric always acts like the gifts are crazy and random, but when he’s told me about them, they always seem oddly…-appropriate. Like totally eccentric, sure, but appropriate to the recipient. It’s like he picks the perfect White Elephant gifts for each family member but he’s 90 percent serious with it. Eric and his family act like he’s just so crazy, but the thing is, I feel like Eric will do the exact same thing in 60 or so years.

So this year, Eric and I received a cardboard box from Wonder made out to both of us. The first gifts were clearly for Eric: a mechanical engineering manual from the 1960s, a VHS tape from the 1980s, still in plastic wrap, promising to “turn your brain into a human calculator!” There was the gift we are still fighting over: a 1980s purple and white Cosby-style cardigan (complete with huge purple football buttons) with four panels on the front featuring Kansas State logos and mascots. And then we got to (presumably) my gifts.

A red velour tank top. A belly dancing kit, complete with the little finger cymbals. A leopard print flask. Red fur handcuffs. Some sort of sex game in a box involving dice. And a thick, color-illustrated paperback book Your Pregnancy.

Thank God we weren’t opening our gifts one by one. I looked around the room but everyone was too busy reacting to their own gifts to notice ours, or our incredibly red faces. And oh, how red our faces were. (Though later Eric’s uncle called me out for apparently announcing louder than I realized that “these handcuffs don’t even have a key — that’s messed up!” with Eric’s mom sitting right next to me.) It takes a lot to embarrass me but…wow. Yeah. The sex and alcohol themes baby-making kit did it.

But if Christmas gifts were meant to bring joy, Eric’s grandfather did it. Eric and I sat there for 10 or 15 minutes laughing so hard, we couldn’t breathe. Tears were streaming down our scarlet faces and we just couldn’t stop them. It wasn’t just the best moment of Christmas 2011 — it was one of the best moments of Christmas I’ve ever had. Total holiday magic.

Any “best of Christmas” moments to share?

Now that the holiday season is in full swing, I realized…it’s time to get on my holiday cards! While I loved my card last year and I usually get into doing creative homemade cards, I just didn’t have a killer idea this year. So I decided to purchase cards from those people who have had killer ideas this year.

I found a great letterpress studio on Etsy for a boxed set of cards (which I’d rather not share until I mail them out!) and then I headed to Flytrap for some additional cards to send to my friends. I blogged about Flytrap right around Valentine’s Day and I knew I’d be hitting them up for some awesome cards and possibly some stocking stuffers come December.

Yesterday, I was faced with the difficult task of choosing just a few cards. There are so many good ones. (“Jesus is coming…and he’s pissed off nobody got him any presents for his birthday.” “Santa is coming…Christ, I hope he doesn’t get any manjuice on my Christmas tree.”) Eventually, though, I was able to narrow things down and pick appropriately inappropriate cards for all my loved ones.

After I picked out cards, I started looking at the other products, including the sticky notes, which I have to recommend as a stocking stuffer or a perfect gift for your office Secret Santa. There are tons of funny ones to choose from; I’m really loving the “Do not eat my poison food” sticky notes for your items in the office fridge.

As I was placing my order, I e-mailed the wonderful woman behind Flytrap to ask her a quick question, and this led to her offering up some more free products for you all! (I swear I didn’t get her drunk first; she’s just that generous. Or she was drinking in the office because, well, holidays have to be a stressful time for card makers.) So…here we go with another giveaway!

I have three prizes to give away to three different winners.

1. Five greeting cards

2. Four sticky notes

3. One journal

Within those categories, all the products will be winners’ choice. To enter to win (we can only ship to US residents so only enter if you have an address they can go to), just leave a comment on this post letting me know what your favorite Flytrap product is. It can be a specific holiday card or birthday card or maybe it’s one of the sexy Littles…whatever strikes your fancy. You have until Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 at 11:59 PM PST to enter and I’ll pick three random winners from there.

The Life: Some Thoughts on Thanksgiving

by Rachel on November 19, 2011

I’m really happy it’s the weekend, but honestly, I just want the weekend to be over because I’m really looking forward to my road trip on Wednesday with Eric and the dogs to Wichita, where I’m spending Thanksgiving again this year.

I never really liked Thanksgiving. Maybe it’s because my family is ridiculous during holidays, or maybe it’s because none of the food really thrills me, but yeah…it’s just never been my thing. While it’s a good idea to have a holiday between Halloween and Christmas, I always kind of thought of Thanksgiving as a white guilt holiday that isn’t even associated with fun decor. Like…why bother?

But this year…I’m actually excited. I’m excited to take a 10-hour road trip to Kansas and hang out with Eric’s family, to make Jess’s grown-up hot chocolate with homemade Bailey’s marshmallows, and to wear my new sweater from Anthropolgie every single day.

I think I’m so excited for Thanksgiving this year because last year was so much fun. There was a 10-hour road trip. Cold weather. A family watching football. And I shot a potato gun.

This year should be even better. First, I won’t be as nervous as I was last year. Last year was my first time meeting Eric’s family and I had no idea what to expect. (His grandpa handed him a condom after dinner on Thanksgiving. Definitely wasn’t expecting that!) But since I pretty much decided during our trip to the Ozarks that I like Eric’s mom and aunt better than I like him, I’m really, really looking forward to hanging out with them. I’m also excited because instead of shooting a potato gun, this year, I might be shooting a real gun. (Fingers crossed!)

Anyway, whether you love or hate Thanksgiving, here are some of my posts on Thanksgiving from the past couple years:

How My Family Does Thanksgiving

How to Host a Fake Holiday

Why You Should Wear Jeans on Thanksgiving

How to Stop Licking the Beaters

A Holiday is One Day

What to Cook Your Boyfriend’s Family for Breakfast (Hint: it’s baked pumpkin French toast)

Thanksgiving Recipe Round-Up

It also occurred to me last night that since Black Friday is next week, I should probably decide what Christmas gifts I’m getting people, so I’ll know if I need to take part in anything that looks like this.

Just kidding…I buy pretty much everything from Amazon when I get my last paycheck before Christmas. If I’m up at 4 AM on Black Friday, it will simply be to finance my Christmas shopping by selling Krispy Kreme donuts and coffee to the desperate people in line at Target at a wildly-inflated price.

Important questions to discuss:

1. Are you a fan of Thanksgiving?

2. What are your plans for this year?

3. Are you going to slide tackle a soccer mom at Target in an effort to get a $5 DVD player? (No judgments!)

You Break It, You Buy It

November 1, 2011

Halloween costume success! My mom and I went back and forth a lot on how to make Eric’s and my Halloween costumes this year because she and I had very different visions. I originally imagined a pretty pink and white dress with a stiff skirt, almost like a tutu. Over that, I imagined two black [...]

Lessons From a Chicago Weekend

October 31, 2011
Thumbnail image for Lessons From a Chicago Weekend

Um, is it seriously Halloween? And it’s almost 5 PM on Halloween?! I don’t feel back to normal after my long weekend in Chicago just yet. I want another week of fall festivities before I have to go through that pain-in-the-ass task I brave just once a year — putting on fake eyelashes! Anyway, here are [...]

Wet Wednesday

It’s the week before Halloween! Things are going so well, I don’t even need a “bothered” list — it’s just slippery wet all the way, baby. The 27th Annual Caesar Salad Competition. Last Friday night, Eric and I went to what I just call “Caesarfest” in Houston. After we went last year, we both wanted [...]

What Your Halloween Costume Says About You

October 13, 2011
tricks and treats

On Sunday, I went to a couple Halloween superstores — so not my style, but with my mom 1,300 miles away, I have to buy some parts of my costume this year — and I was kind of appalled by some of the costumes on the market. Sexy…Sponge Bob? Sexy…mail delivery girl?? WHAT?! As I [...]

The Life: Lifting My Halloween Spirits

September 26, 2011
Thumbnail image for The Life: Lifting My Halloween Spirits

On any given day, it’s easy enough for me to ignore the word “September” on my calendar, tune out the pumpkin latte talk, not read anything fashion-related (Oh, cable-knit sweaters are in? That will go great with the 100 degree weather!), and pretend that it’s still summer for everyone. But the whole denial thing will only take [...]

The Big O…atmeal

September 15, 2011
better oats oatmeal

Oatmeal is pretty much the un-sexiest thing out there so you’d think I could make it through a bowl of it without thinking about P in the V. But…nope. I had seen Better Oats at Super Target and the packaging really caught my eye. I’m a sucker for good design and this is pretty legit. The [...]

Lesson #101: How to Lose Weight & Get in Shape in the Fall

September 8, 2011
Thumbnail image for Lesson #101: How to Lose Weight & Get in Shape in the Fall

It’s a new season so you know what that means — it’s time for everyone to start telling you how to lose weight by taking advantage of all the great things about that season. And you know what? Most of those tips are completely ridiculous and improbable. But I’m not one to miss out on [...]
