A Word From Your Blogger…

by Rachel on October 7, 2011

Check it — right after we made our fabulous comeback, Hollaback Health was nominated for a Best Blogger Award from Shape Magazine!

Part of what we love about this blog is the tight-knit community of writers, and the way they don’t shy away from the important issues such as the role, both positive and negative, that bloggers play in the healthy-living community.

Can I say it’s an honor just to be nominated? Because it is! Honestly, most of the time when healthy living bloggers are recognized by national women’s magazines, it’s bloggers who stick with the status quo and, frankly, kiss ass. I don’t, Hollaback doesn’t, and, as a result, I feel like we tend to go unnoticed. I think it’s pretty sweet that SHAPE , you know…gets it. I’ve taken a lot of shit for Hollaback over the past 18 months and it’s nice to feel like people are seeing that we’re trying to do something good for the community. And the fact that we’re nominated alongside some of the very bloggers who have been giving us so much shit isn’t lost on me; it kinda makes the whole thing more fun!

Anyway, read what SHAPE had to say about us and then — if you like us – vote for us! (No login/signup necessary.)

OMG, We’re Back Again!

by Rachel on October 4, 2011

After a four-month break from working on Hollaback Health, the health bloggers’ blog, we’re back in action!

I started things off this morning with a “what I learned on my summer vacation” essay.

If there’s one topic on a lot of bloggers’ minds right now, it’s Get Off My Internets, a site that isn’t new, but is new to many healthy living bloggers. I was aware of GOMI for a little while, but I had no reason to read it, as it mainly focused on bloggers I didn’t know or read. But suddenly, blogs I do know and read started popping up in the GOMI forums. And then, as we like to say at Hollaback, shit got bananas.

Like many other bloggers, I found myself the subject of a thread in the GOMI forums. They called me a raging slut — and not as a bad thing; as in, “Does anyone else miss the raging slut Rachel Wilkerson?” The question was put out there and people agreed; yes, they missed the raging slut. They said that now I was boring. And hipster.

Call me a raging slut all you want, but I do not like being accused of being a fucking hipster.

Aside from the hipster thing, though, the forum hit on a lot of things about my blog that I was worried about and basically confirmed my fears that I was becoming the blogger equivalent of That Girl Who Gets a Boyfriend and Suddenly Ditches All Her Friends. After spending more time in the forums, reading every single healthy living blogger thread, and interacting with the community there, I can say that I my experience with GOMI was actually pretty positive.

You can read the full post about it on Hollaback: Five Things GOMI Taught Me About Blogging!

A Word From Your Blogger…

by Rachel on July 20, 2011

First: I picked a random winner for the Love Grown Foods granola giveaway! The winner is Bianca, who said, “I’ve heard so many good things about Love Grown Foods but have still yet to try it! My perfect breakfast would be the Cocoa Goodness granola with some chocolate almond milk on a bright but cool weekend morning. It sounds like the perfect pre-run or pre-workout fuel!” Well, congrats to you, lady! I’ll e-mail you later today to get your address.

So the picture above? Is of my lunch. (Via Instagram — follow me at RachWilks!) I’ve been noticing lately that a lot of bloggers post pictures of their food. Is this some kind of a trend?

OK I’m kidding…I used to take more pictures of my food and talk about my workouts in my “Lemme Work It” posts back when I blogged on Shedding It & Getting It (oh it feels like so long ago!). I wanted to be like all the other healthy living blogs, but these days, I do mostly storytelling and mindcasting over lifecasting. And swearing and sexing. And, honestly, I eat a lot of the same stuff and don’t work out quite as often as I used to. On the other hand, I kind of miss telling you how my day was.

So today you might have seen something like…

Dear Diary,

Last night I did Core Fusion Cardio on Yoga Vibes in my new workout shorts from Target. I had heard via the comments of this Eat, Drink, Run post that they are an amazing replica of the Lululemon Groove short and I decided to pay the $17 to find out. They are! Knockoffs FTW!

For lunch today I ate Greek yogurt with Love Grown pecan granola and blackberries and peanut butter [picture] and bacon on the side. While scarfing it down, I watched the puppies engage each other in what I’ve dubbed ‘Bonermania.’ I’m so excited they are getting neutered this week — Googling “my dog has an erection” isn’t my idea of a good time.

Back in the office, we tried to call a new badge we were creating the Stop! Collaborate and Listen award, but one of the bosses didn’t get it. This led to a fun few minutes on YouTube as we played Vanilla Ice’s hit and proved that everyone under the age of 30 knows all the lyrics by heart.

Tonight I’m going to think about working out, and pretend like I’m going to take a walk outside, but it’s probably going to still be 90 degrees at 8:00, so I’m going to count chasing Charleston and Indiana around for two hours after work wearing yoga pants as cardio and just watch Franklin & Bash (in my yoga pants, because it makes me feel athletic).

xoxo!

Rach

Yay or nay? On the one hand, lifecasting can get super boring, I don’t work out that often, and I’m never going to photograph all my food (even though with Instagram I can make it look more special! Like I ate it in the 1970s!). On the other hand, funny little things happen to me quite often and more lifecasting would mean I could post a bit more.

I don’t know…you tell me!

A Serious & Official “Statement”

Knowing how I protective I am over my content, many people have been sending me e-mails this morning about something I want to address here quickly — the new “Own It!” campaign from BlogHer and USAToday.com. So let me seriously and officially answer your question  — Yes, I know. Yes, I have seen it. And [...]

I’m currently playing hostess to one of my favorite imaginary friends — blogger Bess from I Dream of Greenie and her friend Jen! They flew in from L.A. yesterday to visit me and tomorrow they are heading up to Austin. Last night we made the most amazing blackberry margaritas and then went out for Mexican [...]

Lesson #34: On Whining

October 12, 2010
your life is so hard

Most of my friends in college heard me say this at one point or another. Like many things I say, I was both completely serious and not serious at all. The phrase was just my little way of ending the pity party over what to pack for spring break and reminding us that even our [...]

It’s a fine line…

marie claire

between blogging about food and exercise and blogging about weird eating habits that probably should not be encouraged. That much, we know. The Marie Claire drama continued all day yesterday, with the bloggers in question posting rebuttals, the Marie Claire Facebook page turning into a witch hunt, and my little Hollaback post receiving more comments [...]

spaghetti and meatballs

Meatballs, that is! Last night I made these super-easy meatballs to eat during my date night with Eric. (And made them in my new apron! I ended up ordering the Bambi one from Etsy and then just bought a $10 seasonal one at Hobby Lobby on Saturday. I love that store, mainly because now Eric [...]

Introducing…GYMNERTAINMENT

April 22, 2010

Goooood morning! I could barely sleep last night because I’m very excited to launch my newest feature…Gymnertainment! What is Gymnertainment, besides a buzzword nearly as obnoxious as “Brangelina?” Well, I was going to describe Gymnertainment as a “love child” but it’s so much more than that. First, I think it’s more a bastard child than [...]
