shopping

After hearing about my plan for making friends, Houston’s own CultureMap reached out to me about their upcoming event Fashion on Sale. It seemed like a great friend date!

From CultureMap: “It’s  set  to  be  the  city’s  largest  collection  of  women’s  boutique  retailers  in   one  space  offering  end-‐of-‐season  clothing  and  accessories  at  can’t-‐beat  prices.   Some  of  the  30+  presenting  retailers  to  date  include:  7  For  All  Mankind,  a  bientot,   Alexandra  Knight  Handbags,  Atrium,  Azur  West  Salon,  Carrie  Ann,  Ceron  Salon,   Cheeky  Vintage,  Coquette,  David  Peck  Collection,  Edward  Sanchez  Cosmetics,  Elaine   Turner,  Hello  Lucky,  J  Silver,  Korcula,  Lot  8,  Mary  Nichols  Handbags,  One  Green   Street,  Pomp  and  Circumstance,  Rent  the  Runway,  Squared  Away,  The  Blues  Jean   Bar,  The  Do  Bar,  Tootsies,  Vintage  Contessa  and  Woody’s  Furs.”

Uh, you had me at 7 for All Mankind.

There are also a bunch of events all weekend; I love me some beauty demonstrations, but I’m also really excited for the “cocktails and light bites.” I mean, I love lip gloss, but I really love party food. But apparently there will also be faux lashes for everyone, and that might actually excite me more than wine and micro-sliders.

It’s going on this weekend, January 13-15, and you can select your tickets based on how many events you’d like to attend: VIP tickets for $75, Early Entry for $40, or one day General Admission for $20. There’s also a “Man Cave” wrist band; for $12, you can drag a guy (or really any non-shopping enthusiast) along and then let him feast on beer and wings while you buy cute stuff. I’ll be there throughout the weekend, so if you do plan to attend, leave a comment or shoot me a Facebook message so we can be sure to say hello!

And if you’re interested in attending and haven’t bought tickets yet, I have two general admission tickets to give away. (So you can perhaps invite that girl you’ve had your eye on as a potential friend! See also: “Come up with good date ideas.”) To win the tickets, just leave a comment below telling me what you prefer: cocktails and party food, trying on beauty products, or trying on clothes?

I’ll pick a winner at random tomorrow (Thursday, Jan. 12) at noon CST.

When it comes to gifting, I’m pretty sure eating + drinking = merry. Here are the food- and drink-related gifts I’m loving for 2011.

Food Gifts

As I said last year, when it  comes to food-related gifts, I use a formula of something useful + something edible, so I thought I’d share my ideas for what I’d add to these gifts to really make them great, and my thoughts who I’d give them to.

1. Pizza maker. What I’d add: 2. power saw pizza cutter. Who I’d gift this to: Yes, college students and stoners seem like an obvious choice, but I have this pizza maker and I love it! I’d recommend it to anyone who eats a lot of frozen pizza (which isn’t just college students and stoners; frankly, I never met a DiGiorno I didn’t like) and/or anyone who doesn’t have an oven. Or anyone has an oven and would like to make the process of eating frozen pizza even lazier by cutting an extra 10 minutes off the whole process. Like this girl.

3. Meatball maker. What I’d add: a jar of fancy/homemade pasta sauce. Who I’d gift this to: I consider meatballs one of those foods that everyone likes but everyone forgets to make. Whenever I remember to make homemade meatballs, I’m so happy I did. This is just a reminder to make meatballs and a way to make them a bit faster. feel like this is a good gift for anyone who cooks and I can easily see moms, aunts, siblings’ girlfriends, and significant others’ moms and aunts being on the receiving end of this gift.

4. Stock pot. What I’d add: Some kind of fancy dry soup mix; if I couldn’t find something fancy, I’d get an Archer Farms dry soup mix from Target, repackage the ingredients in a cute mason jar, and hand write the instructions on pretty card stock. Who I’d gift this to: This is actually on my list! I cook a lot of soup and could use a nicer pot. It feels really fancy because it’s Le Creuset, but it doesn’t cost $500 like most of their products. This would also make a good gift for someone who just moved out on her own or a new cook. It’s a kitchen staple.

5. Brass knuckle meat tenderizer. What I’d add: spices/meat rub. Who I’d gift this to: My mom, because she’s the griller in my life. Stereotypes require me to recommend this for your boyfriend or dad.

6. Bacon container. (Also available from the Container Store.) What I’d add: some gourmet bacon of course! Every year, I tell people the same thing: that good bacon is a really good Christmas gift. Unexpected and yet so wonderful. You can also expand on this a bit and add pancake mix and pure maple syrup tied with a pretty bow. Who I’d gift this to: anyone who loves bacon.

Drink Gifts

7. Lego water bottle. What I’d add: It depends on the recipient, but I think a home water filter system would be great (they aren’t too expensive and seriously, anyone who drinks a lot of bottled water needs a subtle hint to stop). I might just add some red Gatorade tied with a green bow to it though, because it’s a well-known fact that men love to drink Gatorade when they aren’t doing anything athletic. Who I’d gift this to: Well, Eric and Preston are both getting these this year.

8. Mini cocktail shot glasses. What I’d add: Liquor is quicker, friends! Who I’d gift this to: anyone between the ages of 18 and 30.

9. Gold flask. What I’d add: Alcohol of couse! What kind exactly depends on the recipient, but I’d go to a liquor store like Spec’s where there is a big selection of new/trendy/cool products and I trust the staff to give me a great recommendation. Who I’d gift this to: anyone who likes booze; flasks are one of those things people rarely buy themselves and yet they often find themselves wishing they had. This site has several designs; I went with the “To My Health” option for Eric.

10. Diamond ring bottle opener. What I’d add: A pretty basket featuring six or 12 different beers. Who I’d gift this to: any classy alcoholic. So…any of my friends. This is also on my list this year.

Anything else food- or drink-related else you’d like to give and/or receive this year? I’d love to hear your ideas!

Sunday Funday

by Rachel on November 6, 2011

The past couple weeks have been crazy for me so I was really looking forward to this weekend to finally chill out and catch up. Eric was out of town so I knew I’d be free to have do whatever I wanted without interruption. The one thing I really like to do when I’m alone is clean and make my apartment look pretty.

The reason Eric was out of town was because he was running a Ragnar Relay Race in Tennessee with people from his company. Have you ever heard of this relay race? During the 24-hour race, which is held in a few different locations around the country, twelve people run the 200ish miles that makes it up. From Ragnar’s website:

During the relay, each team member runs three legs, each leg ranging between 3 – 8 miles and varying in difficulty…Only one runner hits the road at a time. The rest of your teammates are on support duty in your race vehicles. It’s a relay, so as the each runner begins, the crew in the vehicle can drive ahead, cheer their runner on, and meet them at the exchange point to pick them up and drop off the next runner.

Eric ran his legs around 5 PM, 1 AM, and 6 AM, and did 14.3 miles total. On the one hand, running 5.5 miles at 6 AM after a night of sleeping in a van sounds like hell…but on the other hand, it also seems like it would be really fun to do with a group of friends. Anyway, I’m proud of him for training for it and then getting through it!

Anyway, on Saturday while he was engaged in all that fun athletic nonsense, I cleaned, which is an activity I find athletic and fun in a disgusting sort of way. I took down all my Halloween decorations, did some laundry and dishes, and vacuumed. At that point I realized that over the past six months, the puppies have taken the already-not-great carpet in the apartment to a whole new level of bad by tearing it up in several places and by peeing on it. I decided that rather than try to get the carpet to look better (an expensive/losing battle), I’d try to cover up as much of it as possible by buying some rugs. The rugs needed to be dark enough that they wouldn’t show further destruction and cheap enough that I wouldn’t care if they got destroyed.

I went to Target where I found one rug I liked that fit the bill before quickly moving on to the shiny things that had by then caught my attention: Christmas decorations.

I firmly, firmly believe that Christmas decorations should not go up until the day after Thanksgiving, but what’s so obnoxious is that you kind of have to start buying now because everything will be picked over in a few weeks. Furthermore, the rug I picked out was a dark red; it wouldn’t not match my dining room (which is brown and white) but I knew it needed something red to tie everything together. And what is red? Christmas decorations.

Still, I exercised a tiny bit of self-control and instead picked out some fall decor that would stay relevant through Christmas. I bought a glass vase, a package of acorns, walnuts, and leaves, and some fake cranberries. I didn’t use the leaves and instead combined the walnuts, acorns, and cranberries to make a centerpiece for my table.

I also bought the pinecone candelabra before dragging myself away from Target and on to more practical things. My next stop was HEB for a major grocery trip.

Part of the motivation for my cleaning bender, attention to decor, and big grocery trip is that I have a visitor coming next week: my aunt Kara. We had a blast the last time she was in town, so I’m really excited to have her here again. But having a visitor means cooking good food and having an apartment that doesn’t look like a crack house (gross carpet has that effect, especially when it’s gross from, you know…long nails and urine) and a fridge that doesn’t look like it belongs in a frat.

After everything I did yesterday, I’m starting to feel like my apartment is looking less I’ve-been-traveling-and-it-was-a-holiday, but it’s not quite to the sure-let’s-have-guests-over-and-make-them-think-our-apartment-always-looks-this-clean that I’d like it to be, so I’m planning to do more of that today. I need to get some food in the slow cooker and then get on cleaning the fridge, one of my least favorite tasks (and that I’m avoiding by writing about).

Other things to make your Sunday fun:

What are you up to today? How’s that extra hour treating you?

I’m Spent: Something Old

As I got dressed this morning, I thought…Haven’t I seen this outfit somewhere before? Like…four years ago? The picture on the left is me at a party my senior year of college; I’m wearing a black V-neck sweater (with a black tank top under it to make up for the fact that it was too [...]

lululemon bag

I couldn’t stay away forever, could I? I’ve actually been really good about not going to Lululemon since losing my virginity to the store back in March. I knew that that store was nothing but trouble, the retail equivalent of the guy your parents warn you about. I know it’s no good for me, but [...]

There have been a lot of takeaways after I wrote about weddings last week. That discussion? Was wonderful! It has inspired so many more posts, the first of which is a fun one, because it’s about fashion. Lesson #89: Reward yourself for going to wedding showers, bachelorette parties, and weddings. Eric and I are driving [...]

Living in Sin: the Patio Exchange

The patio is one area of our apartment that hasn’t gotten much love. It’s a pretty typical apartment patio; it’s big enough for a grill and some small pieces of furniture. I’ve been dying to make it a nice place to hang out, chat on the phone, read, and eat, but Eric not see the [...]

Saturday was Eric’s company’s softball tournament. I was on the winning team. No, really…our team’s name was Winning! and our T-shirts had a picture of Charlie Sheen on them. Besides bringing my awesome softball skillz, I decided to bring cookies! When I saw this recipe for sunflower butter cookies featuring chocolate-covered sunflower seeds, I figured [...]

Living in Sin: The Big Shopping Trip

Thumbnail image for Living in Sin: The Big Shopping Trip

This past weekend, it was time for the big shopping trip. You know, the shopping trip where Eric and I would buy 99 percent of the things we need for the apartment. The shopping trip that had the potential to go badly and turn Eric and me into That Couple as a TV stand debate [...]
